Our Access Impact in 2016

We are currently working on our 2016 Impact Report - we look forward to sharing it with everyone once it is finalised! In the meantime, here are some highlights from our Access work in 2016. 2016 has been our most successful year in terms of access so far. Thanks to your amazing support and dedication, we delivered 1,091.5 hours of bursary support (worth over £100,000) free of charge in partnership with access organisations including The Access Project, Sutton Trust Fullbright Commission, Villiers Park and Ark Schools. We are still waiting to receive all the numbers, but I am delighted to say that six out of the 18 TAP pupils and two out of five students from Paddington Academy (our new access…

OxFizz at The Access Project 2017 Oxbridge Society Kick-off Event

As the New Year is coming into full swing, we have started our 2017 programme ran in partnership with The Access Project. We are now going into 5th year of supporting their Oxbridge Society pupils with their applications! Last week we came to their Oxbridge Society Kick-Off event and spoke to the students and their parents about Oxbridge admissions. This was the first of a series of events we are running in partnership with The Access Project to support TAP students throughout the application process. We will be running an introductory admissions workshop day in February where students will have the opportunity to talk to recent graduates and ask any questions they might have about Oxford and Cambridge, as well…

Merry Christmas from the OxFizz Team!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the OxFizz Team! We would like to thank all of you who made the last interview season such a great success! I will be in touch in the New Year with more details about our impact in 2016 - it looks like it has been the largest bursary year in our history, with three students from The Access Project coming to our summer school and over 1000 hours of workshops, interviews and other types of support provided together with our access partners. We hope you have a restful time over the holidays and we are looking forward to seeing you in 2017!

2015 Charity totals

The 2015 Interview Season charity totals are here! During the Interview Season of 2015 alone we raised over £80,000 for charity just between September and December 2015. A massive thank you to all of our fantastic volunteers who made this possible! We also have some more exciting updates - we are very happy to announce that from now on charity donations for workshops, the summer school and the interviews will be announced at the start of February. This means that we have cut down on the length of time between the time when you volunteer for us and when you get to see the results. Over the past year we have been working to change when charity donations are made to…

First Interview Day of 2016!

Our 2016 Interview Season officially started on Sunday, with our first Interview Day taking place at Latymer Upper School. The day was a great success, with our fantastic interviewers conducting over 120 hours of interviews! The day was unexpectedly large (almost twice the size of last year's day) and we had 23 volunteers on board. It seems like there will be plenty opportunities this interview season to fundraise for your favourite charity as our interview days will be bigger than last year. Get in touch or join our Facebook group to keep updated about our upcoming volunteering opportunities!

Meet Kate, our summer intern!

Having just joined the OxFizz team for the summer, I am excited to begin working on volunteer recruitment and engagement for such an innovative social enterprise. OxFizz's unique model delivers high-quality, volunteer-led educational services to those who can afford to pay, and splits the profits between providing the same services to underprivileged schools for free, and substantial charitable donations. After completing my undergraduate degree in Education with English, I worked as a Projects Officer with Student Hubs, running several volunteering projects at Imperial College London, before undertaking a Master's in Education at Harvard this past academic year. From September, I will be a trainee English teacher with Ark Schools. As I have worked in volunteer management previously, I am looking forward…

Meet Molly, our Spring Intern

Meet Molly, our Spring Intern this year! In this post, Molly shares a little about what she has been getting up to at the OxFizz office over the last three weeks: Hello! My name is Molly, I'm a current undergraduate at University College, Oxford, reading Chinese Studies. Working at OxFizz this Easter vacation has been really enjoyable and I've also learnt a lot. It's been really great to experience working for a social enterprise, especially one as unique as OxFizz. I have been helping out the rest of the team by going through and reorganising their records of all the different charities that OxFizz has donated money to in the past - over 300 different charities! While I was categorizing charities…

OxFizz Supports Oxbridge Hopefuls from across The Access Project

On Saturday 19th March, OxFizz held an event for The Access Project's Oxbridge Society, giving an introduction to Oxbridge and exploring some critical thinking skills with students from schools that don't traditionally send students to Oxbridge. The students took part in three sessions, starting with an introductory talk on applying to Oxford and Cambridge and how Oxbridge applications differ from applications to other universities. The Subject Carousel involved students going from room to room where volunteers would give 15 minute presentations on the subject they studied at university. This gave students the opportunity to experience a little of what it would be like to study subjects such as English, Law, and Human Sciences at university. They allowed students to learn…

The Access Project: an update on our partnership

Yesterday The Access Project released their annual impact report, and we're very proud to be featured The Access Project (TAP) is a fantastic educational programme that we are proud to support. We've been working together for four years, and our partnership with TAP facilitates a large part of the access work we do. Through an annual donation of £30,000 to TAP, we are able to run The Odysseus Project in King Solomon Academy (KSA), where over 40% of students are eligible for free school meals. There was no tradition in the school of sending students on to higher education, but The Odysseus Project supports KSA students to reach their potential, both in terms of academic performance and university attendance. This happens through…

Bye bye Jonathan!

A sad day in the OxFizz office, as we say goodbye to one of our team For the last six months, Jonathan has been working with OxFizz on secondment as part of the Civil Service Fast Stream programme - but it's now time for him to move on to his next placement. During his time with us he's made a massive contribution to the OxFizz team, working as Digital Development Officer to launch some exciting new projects, and of course being a fab friendly face at all our events. Jonathan has been an invaluable part of our development over the last six months, and we hope that it's been just as valuable a time for him, as an enriching insight…
